Tucked away along Bridge Lane is Mr Wongs, a two-hat winner of the Good Food Guide Awards 2020. Mr Wongs boasts a bold Cantonese-influenced theme menu with all your familiar favorites. The place also has an extensively well-curated wine list.
The two-level restaurant is decorated in soft lighting, and its warehouse-style brick walls are painted over with pictures of shanghai era poster girls. The decor is very much in line with Shanghai’s colonial-style art decor in the 1920s – 1930s era.
It’s not just all decor though, the menu at Mr Wongs has been carefully curated by Dan Hong and Jowett Yu, the duo behind Lotus, El Loco, and Ms.Gs. They join forces with ex-Tim Ho Wan executive chef Eric Koh to bring you this new dining experience. Knowing that the team reads like a who’s who of the Australian culinary world, I walked in with sky-high expectations.
We ordered the following items: –
Assorted steamed dumplings
The dumplings immediately scored points for being served at the right temperature and steamed just long enough for the skin to be not too hard or soft.
Peking duck pancakes

One of my highlights at this dinner was the Peking duck pancakes. They got everything right, The pancake skin, the duck meat and skin texture, and of course the sauce. Highly recommend this one.
Salt & pepper calamari

Probably my least favorite dish of the night. The calamari was a bit dry, although the spices were perfect. I hope that this was an anomaly as salt and pepper calamari is one of my favorite dishes.
Honey glazed Kurobuta "char siu" pork

The Korean cuisine-inspired sexy belly burger is another top choice if you’re hungry. The burger features a slow-cooked piece of pork belly that is pan-fried and served with Korean kimchi, lettuce, spicy soybean paste, carrot, mint, coriander, & spring onion with Asian dressing Served with chips.
King Crab Fried Rice

This was a pretty good representation of good fried rice. Everything was right about it; however, it wasn’t a standout dish for me.
Mapo Tofu

Another HIGHLIGHT of my night. The tofu’s silky texture and the mapo sauce are clearly made by someone who understands this dish inside out.
Desserts
For dessert, we got mango pudding and chocolate ice cream. I preferred the mango pudding as it served as a perfect palate cleanser after our meal.

You can tell the chefs in charge of Mr Wongs are experts at what they do. It is crucial, after all, to get all the elements right (or even better) in their food since the menu is full of well-known and loved Cantonese cuisine favorites. I will most definitely be paying them a return visit soon.
