Emperor’s Garden Custard Puffs – Sydney Chinatown

custard puff emperor's garden

Sydneysiders, we need to talk about the custard puffs at Chinatown’s Emperor’s Garden. The Emperor’s Garden bakery is one of the oldest food establishments located in the center of Sydney’s Chinatown. They serve up a vast selection of delicious Asian cakes and snacks. Whether you’re craving steamed bao, egg tarts, or reddish cakes, Emperor’s Garden has it all.

The star of the show, however, is their custard puffs. The Emperor’s Garden custard puffs are made daily and incite a queue of fans outside the bakery waiting to get their hands on these delectable snacks. As you line up, you will be able to see the little custard balls popping straight out of the oven.

It is not hard to locate this bakery in Chinatown. The Emperor’s Garden bakery is a stone’s throw away from Market City in central Chinatown, sitting at Hay Street and Dixon Street’s cross-section. Locate the bright multi-colored sign with a queue at the entrance.

You will then see the window on the left side of the bakery serving the custard puffs. Do not be deterred by the line; they serve up the puffs fast so that the queue will move quickly.

The Emperor’s Garden custard puffs have a creamy filling with a vanilla smell that isn’t too sweet. The pastry puff is fluffy and fresh.

Custard Puffs Chinatown pricing

The queues for the puffs are constant from 12 – 9 pm. Priced at just 3 for $1 or 18 for $5, I was surprised at how inexpensive these tasty bites were. At these prices (unheard of by today’s living standards), why not treat yourself to some custard puffs the next time you’re in Chinatown?

Craving other Asian snacks? Head on into the bakery, and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Pro tip: Eat them while they’re warm but be careful as you’re biting in as the contents can be quite hot.
