Tucked away in a corner along Bayswater Road, Potts Point is Chula, one of Sydney’s most authentic Mexican offerings. The same dynamic duo behind Barrio Cellar and Fei Jai Peter Lew and Nicole Galloway founded Chula Potts Point. The head chef at Chula is Alvaro Valenzuela, who has previously worked in New Zealand and his native Mexico City. His goal with Chula is to showcase the fresher, vibrant side of Mexican food as inspired by his Abuela (grandmother)
The Ambience
“She taught me that everything in life should be done with love, and that includes cooking” – Chef Alvaro Valenzuela, Chula Kings Cross.
This quote not only piqued my curiosity and set the expectations high before my visit. Chula, often used in a sentence as “Mami Chula,” translates to “a beautiful woman.” The restaurant ambiance reflects that as you walk in with the restaurant featuring light yet, vibrant colors bathed in soft lighting. The atmosphere is perfect for big groups to get together or perhaps even for a little date.
The Menu
I immediately noticed the menu was very seafood and vegetables focused. Unfamiliar (but delicious) sounding dishes such as tostadas and ceviche replace the standard Mexican restaurant items such as burritos and fajitas.
The dish items that did sound familiar seemed to also come with a twist. For example, the tacos selection had Nopales Tacos, featuring cactus, mushrooms, onion, queso (cheese dip), salsa, and cilantro.
We ended up ordering a selection of tacos focusing on the seafood choices. They were terrific, the spices were not overpowering, giving the seafood space to shine on its merit. We also ordered the guajillo braised chicken tacos, which again did not disappoint.

Drinks and Dessert
The venue also offers up a wine, mezcal, tequila, and cocktail selection to pair with your meal.
Craving for dessert? I highly recommend the churros sandwich filled with salted ice cream and dulce de leche, need I say more?
