I had been eyeing the Ippudo Ramen Kit for some time and decided to finally purchase it to try it out after seeing it was on sale at Thai Kee. Thai Kee IGA has a restaurant range section that features DIY home packs from some of the most famous Sydney restaurants. I presume most of us are socially distancing and want to avoid the crowds. In that case, the DIY packages provide a great alternative to avoid the crowds while still supporting food businesses.
The kit itself contains a set of instructions, mushroom and chashu toppings, noodles, and soup base.
The instructions ask for you to thaw the ingredients but what I did was soak the soup base and frozen noodles in some hot water. The hot water is now warm and can now be used to heat the toppings.
Cook the noodles now while the toppings are warming up, strain, and keep them to the side. Pour the soup base into a pot and bring it to a simmer.
I placed the cooked noodles into a serving bowl and poured in the soup. We can now set the toppings on top of the noodles.
Tip: Boil an egg for 5-7 mins and let it cool down. The egg will have the almost fully cooked consistency of the Tamago egg you usually find in Ippudo Ramen Noodles.
Verdict
The soup base was spot on, as were the noodles. I did find the chashu a bit too soft for my liking. However, it is a step up from those ramen flavor instant noodles and a good option if you craved some ramen at home.
