The WOW Pass combines a credit card and T- Money (transit Money) capabilities together in one card making it a travel pass option worthy of your consideration for your trip to South Korea.
In this article we will cover what the WOW Pass is, where to get it, and whether it is worth using. Also, check out my YouTube video to learn about the WOW Pass app and how to use it, step by step.
What is a WOW Pass?
The WOW Pass is a multi-functional card that you can use for:
- Exchanging your local currency to Korean KRW (Exchange from 16 different currencies to Korean WON. For exchange rates check their website).
- Making purchases in shops and convenience stores, wherever credit cards are accepted.
- Riding all forms of public transport. You can use the WOW Pass as a replacement for the T-Money Pass to access all public transport services.
How to Get a WOW Pass?
There are two ways to get a WOW Pass:
1) Find a Kiosk:
- Use one of the 140+ machines in Seoul and Busan or at Incheon International Airport. Bring your passport and cash. You can also recharge it with your local currency.
- If you cannot find a WOW Pass machine nearby, visit the official WOW Pass website or app and use the ‘Find a Kiosk’ option to locate the nearest machine.
2) Pre-book Online:
- Download the WOW Pass app (available for both iOS and Android), create an account, and pre-book your pass to receive a 20% discount. This includes a discounted SIM card and a top-up on your T-Money balance.
- Redeem your pre-booked pass at SK Telecom booths at Incheon Airport with your passport and voucher code.
Setting Up the WOW Pass App
- Download the app.
- Open the app and click ‘Scan’.
- Scan the barcode on the back of your WOW Pass.
- Enter the 3-digit code on the back of your card into the app.
How Does WOW Pass Work?
The WOW Pass has two different balances:
- WOW Pass Balance: Used for payments and purchases across convenience stores, malls, and other places. Recharge with credit/debit cards or your local currency.
- T-Money Balance: Used only for public transportation expenses and can only be recharged with Korean WON cash at WOW Pass kiosks.
When checking the card balance on the WOW Pass app, you’ll see both WOW Pass and T-Money balances. Transport expenses are deducted from the T-Money balance, while other expenses are deducted from the WOW Pass balance.
Where to Use WOW Pass?
You can use the WOW Pass across all public transport modes and convenience stores.
You can also get up to 20% cashback at select restaurants and establishments in Seoul and Busan when paying with the WOW Pass. Check the ‘Rewards’ section in the app to explore these discounts. For example, enjoy discounts at Tosokchon Samgyeptang and Michelin-favourite Myeondong Kyoja.
For beauty products, get up to 1,000 KRW back at Olive Young using your WOW Pass. Check out the Hwahae app for top-rated beauty product recommendations by locals.
Does WOW Pass Have an Expiry Date?
Yes, a WOW Pass expires within 6 years from the date of the last top-up. If you plan to revisit Korea within 6 years, you can keep it for your next trip. Otherwise, return the pass at any WOW Pass kiosk in Seoul to get back the remaining balance.
If your WOW Pass expires and you plan to visit South Korea soon, visit a kiosk, follow the steps shown by the machine, verify your identity via the WOW Pass app, and your card will be reissued with its original balance.
Final Take : Is the WOW Pass Worth It?
Absolutely, yes.
The WOW Pass offers a hassle-free way to manage your finances while travelling in South Korea. It eliminates the need for constant currency exchanges and avoids the pesky transactional charges associated with credit cards. Whether you’re using it for public transport, shopping, or dining, the WOW Pass is incredibly convenient. However, if you plan to venture beyond Seoul, it’s wise to carry some cash, as some places still only accept cash payments.
