Tokyo, Japan is an incredible experience for travellers. If you’re visiting the city for the first time, you would definitely not want to miss out on the best attractions the place offers. teamLab Borderless is one such tourist spot that you must visit while in Japan. Expect it to be a one-of-a-kind immersive adventure.

Being the world’s first Digital Art Museum, teamLab Borderless Tokyo offers you an experience you may have never anticipated. First inaugurated in Odaiba in June 2018, the space exhibits artworks that challenge all your senses, including sight, hearing, smell, and taste. While the Odaiba location was closed in August 2022, the museum shifted to a permanent location in the Azabudai Hills, where it reopened for visitors in February 2024. Whether it is the Crystal World, En Tea House, or the Bubble Universe, these exhibits are sure to leave a lasting impression on your mind.

So don’t miss out, as I list down everything—from where it is located, how to book tickets, what is the best time to visit, and more, so that you can come back to this guide when planning your next trip to Tokyo, Japan.

If you’re up for a visual treat of teamLab Borderless (and do not mind some spoilers), do check out my YouTube video below, where I give you a sneak peak of the venue, as well as some of the exhibits I loved.

Finding the exhibition centre is simple; it is on the basement floor of the MORI Building. Here are the address and timings:

Location: Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza B B1, 1-2-4 Azabudai, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan

But you might be thinking, what is the best time to go? There is no restriction on the entry time, and you can take as much time as you need once you’re inside. But if you want to explore in a crowd-free environment, I’d suggest going at around 6:00 PM JST, as it might take between 2 to 3 hours to explore all the rooms within the venue.

Prep-Up — What to Carry, What Not To, Prerequisites

Before you go, make sure you are well-prepared, and have the necessary items with you, so that you can enjoy a seamless experience. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Smartphones and cameras are allowed throughout the entire exhibition. However, you cannot carry tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, or other auxiliary equipment. Flash photography is also prohibited.
  • You can carry a small bag with your essentials, but you will need to check it into a locker before entering. The locker rooms are near the exit, so it is convenient to retrieve them at the end of your trip.
  • No food is allowed at entry, and there are no food options available inside the museum. Make sure you eat something before entering.
  • Wear light and comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy on your feet, as you will be spending the next 2 to 3 hours walking and exploring all around the 10,000 m2 exhibition.
  • Baby carriers are not allowed.
  • No animals except service dogs are allowed inside.

What to Expect at teamLab Borderless Tokyo

teamLab Borderless is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that takes you into an all-immersive digital adventure.

  • Sensory Adventure: With over 50 exhibits, the artworks transcend the borders of visitors’ sensory abilities. Each corner is unique, with the items constantly changing forms such that no two people have the same experience. Visitors are allowed to touch all the artworks, and the art depends on the visitor’s interactions to change and evolve. In certain sections, visual art is accompanied by musical symphony and fragrances, seemingly coming out of nowhere.
  • Borderless Artwork: The artworks seamlessly move around walls, floors, and basically any surface throughout the rooms. You may also notice animals or patterns from one room appearing in another room, which I feel is really fascinating.
  • Make your Own Journey: The lack of signage or guides makes it a pick-your-own-adventure type of format. The exhibits are spread across five main sections, namely Borderless World, Athletics Forest, Future Park, Forest of Lamps, and the En Tea House, each containing its own adventure.

In the next section, I’ll highlight some of my most loved exhibits that are unmissable in my opinion.

A forest of light bubbles suspended in empty space is something that may astound you in this part of the museum. Countless bubbles float within the exhibit, with light moving inside the spheres. The bubbles closest to the visitors shine the brightest with a resonating sound.
