My Night at Saint Peter Paddington

“No part of the fish goes to waste” is the philosophy that chef/owner of Saint Peter Paddington Josh Niland takes pride in. It makes sense that Saint Peter, a small dining room located on Paddington’s Oxford Street, lets the food, or rather the fish, do the talking.

You never quite know what you will get on the menu as all seafood used changes daily, but this definitely doesn’t stop the foodies from visiting; in fact, reservations are the only way you will get to dine at this establishment.

1. Starters

As a massive advocate of the “go big or go home” philosophy for food, we ordered THREE starters.
There are at least 5 different varieties of oysters at any given time on the menu to warm up any seafood lover’s palette. We also had a highly recommended started dish – fresh Dory liver pate served with a side of sourdough bread.

Sliced aged Mahi Mahi served with capers, shallots, sardine gram, and fried swim bladder. You can literally taste the freshness of the fish, which paired perfectly with the bed of vegetables’ tanginess.

Sardines at Saint Peter Paddington

Sardines served on a bed of sweet and sour currants with shallots, reduced radicchio, and crunchy hazelnuts sauce. The combined flavors of the fish and the vegetables were an absolute winner.

2. Main and Sides

I chose the John Dory for the main dish – three parts of the fish were grilled and served with roasted tomatoes and anchovies.
We chose to pair this with some truffle fries and stir fry vegetables

3. Wines

Saint Peter Paddington also has a killer wine list. Our meals were paired with 2 superb Australian made Chardonnays – a 2017 Mount Mary and a 2013 Leeuwin Estate.

4. Dessert!

No visit to Saint Peter is complete without trying out the classic custard tart that is delicious and photogenic. The chef heated up a knife to slice the pastry, and you can immediately tell how soft the filling is, a testament to the freshness of the ingredients. The tart was not too rich and perfectly capped off a night of delightful flavors.
